How acupuncture works

Acupuncture works through a network of meridians and points. Acupuncturists in the U.S. insert sterile hair-thin stainless steel needles through your skin at specific points along meridians on your body.

Meridians are a network of energy channels forming a type of grid throughout your body, including your limbs, hands and ears. Research indicates the meridians may be an actual physical network that corresponds to, or parallels, the peripheral nervous system.

Acupuncture points are control points along the meridians. Stimulating these points balances energy by increasing, decreasing or redirecting energy flow to the area of the body that needs treatment. Some points may not be on or near the part of your body being treated. Through training and experience, acupuncturists determine which points to stimulate.

Although needles are the most common way to stimulate acupuncture points, finger pressure, heat, cupping, and electric current are also effective.

What to expect

Before treatment, Dr. O’Leary will examine you and discuss your options. Acupuncture treatment takes about 20-30 minutes. Acupuncture needles are used once and discarded. Depending on your condition, you may also have a chiropractic adjustment and craniosacral therapy.

Acupuncture is an ancient technique

Acupuncture developed as part of traditional Chinese medicine about 5,000 years ago. Charts representing acupuncture points and meridians date as far back as 300 B.C. “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine,” written around 2600 BC, is one of the first surviving documents to mention acupuncture.

Acupuncturists are healthcare professionals

In the U.S., acupuncturists require several years of education and training to be certified and licensed in their home state. They take additional education each year for recertification. Molly O’Leary, DC, has been a Missouri state-certified acupuncturist since 1994. She is a Diplomate, Acupuncture Society of America.
